Lyrics Born: Review, As U Were, EXAMINER.COM
Lyrics Born has been working like a mad man since 2008’s Everywhere at Once. Now he’s back with fresh material. The Berkeley, CA legend is slated to release his third solo effort AS U Were October 26th. The album will be his first release with New York’s Decon records and features production from Jake One and Trackademics.
Always the genre bender, LB’s first single “Lies x 3” is already gaining airtime on Bay Area modern rock stations. The catchy tune displays his penchant for creating sing along choruses. Hip-hop purists are not left out in the cold. Lyrics Born goes hard on “Oh Baby,” rhyming over a snare drum so funky it would make James Brown get up offa his thing. He also gets introspective on the somber “I’ve Lost Myself.” Unlike the more up tempo songs on the album, this track deals with the “dark side of the dream” and the struggle not to crack under the pressures of fame.
Fans can still expect cameos from the usual suspects like singer Joyo Verlade and Blackalicious’ Gift of Gab. LB’s trademarked humor is back in full force too with several humorous skits that give listeners a brief intermission to catch their breath between the danceable tunes.
In addition to the new record, Lyrics Born will be hitting the road this fall with Chali 2na of Jurassic 5 and Rakaa of Dilated Peoples. Chali 2na released Fish Market Part 2 over the summer, while Rakaa released his first solo album Crown of Thorns.
With a career spanning over a decade, Lyrics Born is truly an indie music champion. He has continually turned out hits whether he’s riding solo, as a member of Latryx with fellow emcee Lateef, or as the co founder of Quannum records
