- New DJ Shadow Promo A new promo on MCA for DJ Shadow is out called
One To Grow On. No new tracks, but it is a nice compilation of
Endtroducing...., Pre-Emptive Strike, and Psyence Fiction tracks. Here
are the tracks:
1.In/Flux
2.Lost and Found (S.F.L.)
3.Midnight In A
Perfect World (Extended Version)
4.The Number Song (Cut Chemist Party Mix)
5.Stem/Long Stem
6.High Noon
7.Lonely Soul
8.Dark Days (Main
Theme)
As I state in the discography, this release is notable as it is the
only US release that contains "Lost and Found (S.F.L.)" and the extended
version of "Midnight" both released on Mo'Wax in the UK.

- Product Placement... Well, I got my copy of Product
Placement in the mail yesterday along with a copy of the Freeze
video of the 1/18/00 Brainfreeze show at the El Rey in Los Angeles-- which was
billed as the "farewell." Since I was not able to see any of the Brainfreeze
shows, it was pretty cool to get to see this. To avoid any problems with a
certain convenience store chain all references to a certain promotional 45
have been removed. So, when the show got to the part with that 45, we see a
black screen with "Edit" on it. Additionally, logos have been edited out. It
doesn't distract too much from the show however, and I would highly recommend
purchasing one of these if you can. The tape has sets from Marvski, Dante,
Numark, and Z-Trip who were at this show as well. I was particularly impressed
with Z-Trip's set who included a bunch of Metal artists like Sabbath, Rush and
Zeppelin. There is also some fun at-home footage of Cut and Shadow getting
ready for the shows. There was also some lo-fi footage from the Future
Primatives show that preceeded it. I've listened to the Product
Placement CD once, and I am as impressed as I was with the first effort.
This time they went a ways to help distinguish it from the bootlegs that are
certain to follow. There is a holographic sticker with a serial number on the
back of the case. There were 6000 of these pressed, so I suspect that there
should be enough. The CD is without a record label, like Brainfreeze
was, the only indication is the "One29 Recordings," which is how many records
were used to make this mix. So, is "Sixty7" the number of records used in
Brainfreeze? The CD itself is a two-track affair clocking in at 56:45.
The first 30-minute track is a wholly-unique mix starting out with a sample
from one of my favorite 45's-- "I Love Trash" by Oscar. The second track
starts as almost a remix of the original Brainfreeze. There are some
familiar-sounding samples in there, but they seem to be different segments of
the same records or different recordings of the same songs used. For example
there is "California Soul" by the Messengers and also by the Gerald Wilson
Orchestra. Also, instead of "Funky DJ" we get "Funky Black Man." From there it
becomes an adventure in soft beverages and motocross ending in dark days...

- Dark Days DVD Out The Dark
Days DVD is released and is amazing. The movie itself is deserving of
all the great reviews. I've watched it a couple of times already and I am
still astounded about the effort. The bonus material is just as interesting as
the film itself. An extensive "making of" and other bonus material is
included. DJ Shadow is included in a couple of parts with his comments and his
version of how he came to be included in this project.

- At long last... djshadow.com
relaunches! And, yes, I am working on both sites... In April or May Josh
contacted me to ask me if I was interested in being part of the djshadow.com
re-launch. He pulled in Derick Daily, the guy who did the amazing Quannum site
to head up the graphics and layout and he wanted someone to work on the
content-- "hosting" in his words. Since the deal with Musicfans.com was
collapsing and I was unsure of where I'd go next if Endtroducing died, this
seemed like the perfect situation. After a couple of extended phone calls
between myself and Derick and Josh we came up with a plan and ideas for
initial content. Hard work on everybody's part brought the site where it is
today. There is still more content in the works. Thankfully Josh had some
pretty specific ideas about what he wanted in the site. The navigation concept
was his, for example. I am excited to be on-board and to continue carrying the
torch of DJ Shadow information in this new venue. All of the form submissions
come to me, BTW, and I will do my best to answer all requests and questions,
like I do here.
So what am I going to do with Endtroducing.com? Well, I
am going to keep running it. The real breaking news will be at djshadow.com,
and I will "filter" that over here. The discography here will be more in-depth
than over at djshadow.com by design. I will continue to run the FAQ here, so
Endtroducing.com is really going to be a support site for the mailing lists. I
will keep the links page going as well. So far, I think there is a reason for
both sites to exist. If anyone has any ideas about new direction for
Endtroducing.com, let me know. I am open to suggestions. I feel that
endtroducing.com is by the fans for the fans. Thank you for supporting my
efforts over the years, as always, your humble webmin.
- Brainfreeze Sequel to drop DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist have created
another all-45's work. The title is unannounced, but the plan will be to debut
the new CD at live shows in the second half of October. The dates of the shows
are not finalized, but preliminary dates are worldwide. From djshadow.com.
- New solo album scheduled for release 2/02 DJ Shadow is still
working on the new album. Check djshadow.com Future section for an update.
The album will be on MCA in the US. He is label mates with Quannum group Blackalicious.

- Shameless Plug Department I've been going through my record and
memorabilia collection and identifying doubles, etc. of some DJ Shadow and
non-DJ Shadow related items. I'll be selling them on eBay, so if you're
interested check out my
auctions. Happy bidding! Thanks...

- Coming Soon Watch djshadow.com for the re-launch. Currently
there is a temporary splash page with some teasers of what is to come. While
you're there, sign up for the mailing list!

- Dark Days DVD Although not "officially announced" anywhere I can
find, some digging around turned up a September 25th release date of Dark Days on DVD. CDNOW.com
has it listed for pre-order.

- Brainfreeze Flavors Out now on Magic Sneakers Records, Slurped:
Original Brainfreeze Flavors Vol 1. This release-- available on 2 LP or
CD, collects 16 of the tracks used on the Brainfreeze release. According to
Dave Hayes, this release is available at Aquarius Records in San Francisco
or Kim's in NYC. Do a search for "Slurped" on the Aquarius page to get both
versions. The cover has a parody of the original cover with two robbers (black
clothes and black hose on their heads). Get yours before they disappear!

- A little update... There hasn't been much news lately. But, to
answer a popular request... Shadow is feverishly working on the new solo
album-- which is still slated for release on MCA in September. The process has
him travelling between home and the UK. In recent e-mails, he expresses a real
excitement for the project. More news as anything develops.

- Reebok Ad During Survivor 2 has DJ Shadow Production A couple of
weeks ago rumors were floating around on the Internet regarding Reebok's new
"Defy Convention" ad
campaign and DJ Shadow's possible involvement in it. I have verified that
the commercial used during Survivor 2 tonight had DJ Shadow producing a
version of "William Tell Overture" for the Spike Jonze-produced commercial
spot. The high-energy :60 spot features many images of sports and
sports-related events as well as some seemingly non-sports related images. No
other information regarding this is available at this time.
- The Brainfreeze Continues Two years after the original performance
and one year after the last, the Brainfreeze legacy continues. Future
Primitive is releasing a compilation album called URBAN REVOLUTIONS on
February 12th, and it features a "Dance The Slurp" interlude taken from the
Last Brainfreeze performance, where actual Slurpees were passed out to the
crowd. The album (3LP's or 1 CD) also features new and exclusive tracks from
Rob Swift, Z-Trip, DJ Faust & Shortee, and DJ Design among others. Thanks
to John Book for the reporting...
- New Shadow track on Compilation A new track credited to "The Groove
Robbers featuring DJ Shadow" called "Flashback" is now available on a a
compilation called "Turntables By The Bay vol
1" on Hip Hop Slam records. This is a vinyl-only release and is available
at Sandbox Automatic. From Josh
in an e-mail to me in September of last year, "The "Turntables by the Bay"
track is an all-turntables track I did as an experiment a couple of months ago
(no sampler was used). I just wanted to see what I could come up with. I had
fun making it, and it's pretty unique as far as my body of work."
