DJ Shadow
News

    December 13, 1998
  • The Automator/Prince Paul project Handsome Boy Modelling School (see February 25 news item below)-- which includes contributors like DJ Shadow, Beastie Boy Mike D, Alec Empire and Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke-- is slated for release in April on Tommy Boy. The record is being described as Hip-Hop-textured experimental music. The release will consist of between fifteen to twenty "things," some of which will be skits, and the rest songs. DJ Shadow and Mixmaster Mike are reported to collaborate on a track called "Holy Calamity."

    December 10, 1998
  • "Be There" info: The new "Be There" single will be released in the UK on February 1st. Evidently a quantity of advance copies were leaked-- which is why BBC1 and XFM are playing them already. There will be a video for the single but it won't include Ian Brown. Additional tracks will likely include the Noel Gallagher remix of "Drums of Death (pt. 2)" (see November 15 item below) plus some remixes of "Celestial Annihilation" done by the Committee. Thanks to Alison and Neil Parnell for the updates!

    December 5, 1998
  • From my source at Mo'Wax: MTV's 120 Minutes on Sunday (Monday morning) will be showing the "Rabbit in Your Headlights" video. Set your VCR's!

    December 2, 1998
  • The new UNKLE single with Ian Brown is called "Be There" but the backing music is virtually identical to "Unreal."

    December 1, 1998
  • According to Neil Parnell, the BBC is playing a version of "Unreal," one of the instrumental tracks from Psyence Fiction, with Ian Brown formerly of the Stone Roses on vocals. See also the March 1, 1998 News item below.

    November 27, 1998
  • According to a UK source of mine, UNKLE will be doing a tour of the UK, without DJ Shadow. This tour will evidently be just James Lavelle DJ-ing along with the Scratch Perverts. Lavelle said recently that he and DJ Shadow have no plans to work in the future as UNKLE. Evidently it was too hard for Shadow to collaborate as much as he had to on Psyence Fiction. James also verified that Shadow is currently working on an album to be released through Mo'Wax in 1999.

Here is the latest tour information for UNKLE:
    Sun Jan 10th Glasgow QMU
Mon January 11th Liverpool Lomax 2
    Tue January 12th Manchester University
Thu January 14th Leeds Metro University
    Fri January 15th Sheffield University
    Sat January 16th Warwick University
    Mon January 18th Cardiff University
    Tue January 19th Bristol University
Wed January 20th Oxford Brookes University
Fri January 22nd Leicester De Montfort University
    Sat January 23rd Norwich UEA
    Sun January 24th London Astoria

    November 21, 1998
  • According to Rocktropolis DJ Shadow contributed some "drumwork" to the Automator's new project "Bombay The Hard Way," an album based on samples from classic Hindi "Brownsploitation" movies. According to the article, Shadow just happened to be in the studio one day when Dan was working on it.

    November 15, 1998
  • According to Oasis Net News Noel Gallagher of Oasis has remixed "The Knock (Drums of Death Pt. 2." No word on how this will be released. Thanks to Lee Horner for the tip.

    November 14, 1998
  • Contrary to the rumor that I heard, it was Mixmaster Mike who got beaned with a bottle, not DJ Shadow!! Thanks to Alison for the clarification. Best of health to Mike.

  • It appears that Mo'Wax just signed a distribution partnership with XL-- a subsidiary of Beggars Banquet for worldwide (not US) distribution. However, all artists currently signed to Mo'Wax/Polygram will remain Mo'Wax/Polygram including DJ Shadow and UNKLE.

    November 8, 1998
  • UNKLE Page on MTV.com: MTV has a dedicated page to UNKLE's show in NYC at Virgin. There is some video, interviews, and the full 24-minute remix in RealAudio.
  • Evidently E! Entertainment reported last week that DJ Shadow was hit in the head with a bottle during one of the Latyrx/Blackalicious shows. As I understand it he went to the hospital and came back later to finish the show.
  • I have a new e-mail address now: mike@endtroducing.com. Please use this when you want to communicate with me!

  • Site News: Endtroducing has moved! In an attempt to make this site more maintainable, I have moved Endtroducing from its long-time home at spy.net to its new home in Cedar Rapids, mob.net. Changes at Spy required that I move Endtroducing. Big thanks to the folks at Spy for keeping Endtroducing running during the year it was there. Endtroducing would not have been possible without you. More big thanks to the staff at Mob Internetworking for assisting in the transition to its new home. For the most part you shouldn't see any difference in the service. I will be transitioning my email address to endtroducing.com (or mob.net as they are the same) from ibm.net, too. More news as progress continues.

  • Instore News: I have pictures coming! As soon as I get them, they will be put up organized by city. I have a picture of DJ Shadow and myself at the Chicago show that I will be proudly displaying, too!

  • I finally updated the Links page. Thanks to everyone who contributed new links and alerted me to the outdated ones.

    October 3, 1998
  • UNKLE Instore Tour News: The UNKLE Instore Tour is over. I went to the Chicago show. I will be collecting all of the details for each of the stops in the UNKLE Instore Invasion Page. If anyone has any details or photographs to contribute to the page, please contact me, and I will put them up!

  • From NYC UNKLE Q&A session: The Quannum project Spectrum with Shadow, Latyrx, and others (see September 19 item below) will be released February 1999. (Thanks to Grapeking)

  • From NYC UNKLE Q&A session: Shadow says that he didn't work on the Prince Paul/Automator project The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. This is contrary to all of the interviews and articles that I have read up until recently. There is something strange going on with that project. More news as I get it. (Thanks to Grapeking)

  • From NYC UNKLE Q&A session: Shadow contributed to a track on the upcoming Blackalicious album. No word on the release date, yet.

  • The NYC UNKLE appearance was supposed to be taped by MTV. No word as yet how this will be used.

  • There are still plans for a big Psyence Fiction concert to include all of the artists who participated. Obviously there are big issues with conflicting schedules. More news as I get it.

  • The "Rabbit In Your Headlights" video is playing on MTV Europe. There are two versions of this video. The version playing in Europe, which is also the version shown at the instore appearances, is the one with the homeless man getting hit repeatedly by passing cars. The other version will have the cars removed. The latter will probably be the version we get in the US. Currently MTV has no plans to put this video into rotation. Please help by bombarding MTV with requests for this video by using their neato request form.

  • Latryx and Blackalicious are touring with DJ Shadow and DJ Sativa in October. I don't have all of the dates, yet. But, here is what I have:

10/9/98 Portland (I don't know if Shadow will be there)
10/19/98 Cleveland Heights, OH @ Grog Shop (9PM)
    10/20/98 Grand Rapids, MI @ The Intersection (8PM, 18 & over)
    10/22/98 Chicago @ The Metro (Midnight, 18 & over)
    10/28/98 NYC @ the Wetlands (9 PM, 18 & over)

    September 25, 1998

  • Quannum News: Shadow just finished 2 songs for his new Quannum collaborative record called Spectrum. According to the Quannum.com Update Page this is the long-awaited follow-up to the Solesides Radio Sole Vol 1. collection. Shadow still has one more song to do and it is finished. It will feature Lateef, Lyrics Born, and Blackalicious as well as Joyo who did the vocals on Balcony Beach. It will be distributed by NU GROOVE.

    September 14, 1998
  • UNKLE Instore Tour! DJ Shadow and James Lavelle will be doing a five-stop instore tour of the U.S. in support of the U.S. release of Psyence Fiction. Each stop tentatively will be made up of a debuting of the "Rabbit In Your Headlights" video, DJ Shadow performing a special UNKLE set that will never be repeated after this tour, a Q&A session with James Lavelle, followed by an autograph session.

    9/28 - L.A. - Virgin Sunset @ midnight
    9/29 - SF - Virgin Market St. @ 5:00 PM
    9/30 - Chicago - Tower Clark St. @ 7:00 PM
    10/1 - NYC - Virgin Union Square @ 6:00 PM
    10/2 - Austin, TX - Waterloo @ 5:00 PM
  • UNKLE News: UNKLE has a small article and picture in the October 1998 issue of Spin in the Noise section. Quoth Lavelle: "I don't want to be perceived as some f*cking toy... I just want to achieve something without people perceiving it as hype or luck."

    September 3, 1998
  • It appears that Painkiller Kill the Pain Mix from DJ Shadow will be finally seeing official release. According to rumors and from Depeche-Mode.com, on September 7th, a new single from Depeche Mode, "Only When I Lose Myself" will include some b-sides with guest remixers including Dan the Automator and GusGus as well as Painkiller Kill the Pain Mix. I guess that the sample clearance is resolved.

    August 19, 1998
  • The Official U.N.K.L.E. Website is finally operational and has a bunch of really cool things on it like cover art for each of the various releases as well as UNKLE-related toy information, album samples, and the list goes on. The really cool thing (IMHO) is that in the section that lists the Family Tree of UNKLE and their websites, Endtroducing.com is listed as DJ Shadow's!

  • Better late than never department: Tonight James Lavelle and DJ Shadow were due to appear on BBC-1's "The Evening Session" with Steve Lamacq at 6:30pm (UK time). If you didn't catch it, maybe you can score a copy of the show. I imagine some will be floating around the Shadow fan base.

  • In/Flux News: Michael Beam our caring listserv admin has finally made the web-based subscribe/unsubscribe interface for the freestyle jam known as In/Flux. If you want to know about things Mo'Wax or Shadow as well as things maybe not related, but entertaining anyway SIGN UP NOW!

  • Polygram has shut down its A&M UK imprint, which was the distributor for Mo'Wax in the UK. (London/ffrr is the distributor of Mo'Wax titles in the US) The new distributor for Mo'Wax for everywhere besides Japan, France and the US will be Island UK.

  • It looks like the tentative release date for Psyence Fiction in the US will be September 29. The US version might be without the Heroes and Villains intro track due to sample clearance problems.

  • Here is the UK bio for UNKLE.
    July 2, 1998

  • UNKLE news: On June 29th a promo 12" with "Rabbit in the Headlights, the Kool G Rap track, "Unreal" instrumental, and a 5" vinyl included in the pop-up format will include the Badly Drawn Boy track "Nursery Rhyme." Other advance releases will include a "snippets" CD and a full album CD. The regular release formats will include a limited edition CD, a standard CD, a limited edition LP set, a standard LP set, cassette and MiniDisc. [whew..!]

    June 17, 1998
  • UNKLE news: The name of the new UNKLE album will be PSYENCE FICTION. The previous rumor (see Jan 21 News item below) about the release of Rabbit in the Headlights as a single released before the album at least for now appears to be false. The tentative release date for Psyence Fiction in the UK is set for August 24. No word on US or elsewhere, yet.

    June 13, 1998
  • Quannum news: Quannum.com is up and, according to the webmaster, who asked me to pass this along, will include Real Audio clips from SS001-SS003 and the Radio Sole compilation. • New Quannum release: Not to be confused with the "Muzappers Mixes EP" there will be a new release, SS011, the "Muzappers Remixes EP." The tracks are from Latyrx, The Muzappers Mixes and the "Lady Don't Tek No" 12." The track list is as follows:

    Lady Don't Tek No
    Cloud #9
    Lost In The Feelin'

  • Quannum news: The fine folks at Sandbox Automatic will be handling the distribution for the Quannum (see March 20 News item below) releases, as well as hosting the new Quannum.com domain. The site says that it will be up June 13th. While visiting Sandbox, get yourself a copy of the last Solesides release, SS010, "Lady Don't Tek No" single.
  • Here is an unidentified article that was forwarded to me by John Book:
Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Verve, Kool G Rap Come Out For DJ Shadow

Josh Davis, better known as California's own DJ Shadow, was in London last week enlisting help from Radiohead's Thom Yorke and the Verve for his new album, "U.N.K.L.E.," which is due out by the of the year [sic.]. But aside from the assistance provided by the U.K. rockers, Shadow is most pleased that he was able to collaborate with a certain hip hop veteran that he considers an underground idol.

"Kool G Rap is on my new record," Shadow explained to the MTV Radio Network, "and he's well respected in New York and a legend in my mind. Kool G. Rap is some one that I grew up listening to and I admire him lyrically." Meanwhile, Shadow's Solesides Records has become defunct, although the DJ has formed another imprint, Quanuum, from the previous label's ashes.

"Solesides was something that was built and something we destroyed," Shadow said. "We collectively sat down there and said, 'Well, this is six years old and it's done more than we could have imagined, but now we want to try a different thing.'"

Shadow's new artist-run label includes such acts as Latryx, Blackalicious, the Gift of Gab, Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truth Speaker, all of whom were on Solesides.

  • Pre-Emptive News: "Painkiller (Kill The Pain Mix)" will be released as a bonus track to the Japanese pressing of "PRE-EMPTIVE STRIKE", due out July 20th. The other bonus track will be the Cut Chemist Party Mix of "The Number Song". Thanks to John Book for the tip.

  • The Good, The Bad & The Ugly News: From the NME website says the album will be finished in July, and is expected to be released sometime in the fall of 1998. DJ Shadow has produced a number of tracks, and The Automator says there is potential for a number of singles to be released from the album.

    June 2, 1998
  • The reported appearance of DJ Shadow at the Verve concert was false. James Lavelle played, but Shadow did not. I will be removing the May 17 entry. Let's hear it for the British Music press!

  • In other rumored British news, Q Magazine reports that the UNKLE album is scheduled for release on August 24th. with unfinalized plans for a Royal Albert Hall show featuring all of the participants of the album. We'll see.

  • Site News: I just added a link to Michael Lane's DJ Shadow Samples page on the Links page.

    May 3, 1998
  • Site News: I just reworked the Discography page to use Java-ized buttons and allow you do view the discography by the categories of Albums, Singles, Compilations, Live, and Production work. There is also a button that generates the full discography as it always was. Except now it is generated with neet-o Server Side Includes (for you HTML-saavy folks). I hope this enhances your stay at Endtroducing.

  • The May issue of Spin Magazine's "Spin Top 40" lists DJ Shadow at #26, up from 1997's ranking of 29.

    March 22, 1998
  • From Billboard Magazine Daily Music Update,
DJ Shadow is opening a new label called Quannum in the wake of the closing of SoleSides. The label's roster will include Latyrx, Blackalicious, the Gift of Gab, Lyrics Born, and Lateef the Truth Speaker. Thanks to John Book for the tip.

  • Word from an employee of Solesides via Mike Kegler gives some information on the closing of Solesides. First, The crew felt they had taken the indie as far as they could. DJ Zen is fed up with the business aspect and has a kid to support, so he is going to shift his focus to his new magazine, Color Lines. Second, Xcel is talking with some majors about releasing Blackalicious' new album Nia, as well as future projects, with a primary clause in the contract being artistic freedom. Third, The Latyrx album and Muzapper's EP will probably stay cataloged [on Quannum]. Fourth, The Quannum project is still a go. After Shadow has completed the U.N.K.L.E. project, the crew hopes to sit down and work on it. What label Quannum will appear on is not known yet [I guess this is referring to the Solesides "supergroup" and not the label --Mike]. Reportedly, Shadow will be changing his license plate from 'SOLESIDS' to 'QUANNUM' soon.

    March 20, 1998
  • From Addicted to Noise News of the World:
"Solesides Records, the artist-owned label founded by hip-hop cut-and-paste artist DJ Shadow, Blackalicious and Latryx, has ceased operations "effective immediately," said Solesides..."

    March 4, 1998
  • More U.N.K.L.E. News: The Radiohead list said that recent interviews with Shadow indicate that the U.N.K.L.E. album might be released earlier than expected, possibly by this summer. Thanks to Mike Kegler for the update.

    March 1, 1998
  • More U.N.K.L.E. News: The current issue of Mojo Magazine (with Bob Dylan on the cover) has a brief interview with Ian Brown formerly of the Stone Roses, in which he states that among his future plans are "something for James Lavelle's UNKLE project." He does not say exactly what he will be contributing (music or vocals). Thanks to David Hayes for the tip.

    February 25, 1998
  • According to Addicted to Noise in their Music News of the World section, Automator (Dr. Octagon) will be working with Prince Paul on another project called Handsome Boy Modelling School. Possible other contributors include DJ Shadow and DJ Kid Koala.

    February 22, 1998
  • According to Juno there will be a DJ-only release of "The Number Song"/"Painkiller (incl. Cut Chemist Mix) 12", limited to 3000 copies. The catalog number will be MW086DJ.

  • The article referenced in the January 6, 1998 News below regarding Prince Paul's The Good, The Bad and the Ugly project with DJ Shadow also said that the label carrying this project will be Dreamworks. Dreamworks is also home to Dr. Octagon (Automator) and Propellerheads.

    February 15, 1998
  • According to Juno Mo'Wax will be releasing SoleSides artists Latryx DJ Shadow-produced single "The Lady Don't Tek No." The catalog numbers will be SL 8003 for the 12", and SL 8003CD for the CD. No other information, yet.

  • In site-related news: CDNOW has added my banner to their DJ Shadow ordering page.

    February 5, 1998
  • Get your VCR's ready: Rui Miguel Abreu has informed me that on March 27th, MTV Europe is going to have a two-hour special on Mo'Wax records including interviews with DJ Shadow and James Lavelle as well as videos and other stuff. No word on an MTV US broadcast. I suspect that there won't be one.

    January 29, 1998
  • More online coolness: Michael Beam of Underworld has graciously offered to host the first ever DJ Shadow Mailing List! It is called Influx. There will be a subscriber page on Endtroducing in the future, but for all you who want to get on now, here are the instructions:

Mail majordomo@lists.underworld.net with the body: "subscribe influx" (or influx-digest) then you will be getting a confirmation reqest. Michael will then authorize the joining. The confirmation is necessary since 90% of future subscribers will subscribe via the webpage, and we don't want people signing other people up!

Michael is currently running the Radiohead listserv on Underworld. Visit Underworld for details on how to subscribe.

    January 25, 1998
  • In site news, the new domain name for this site is now www.Endtroducing.com! The current/old URL will continue to function as long as Spy Internetworking is hosting this site, be sure and update your bookmarks and links! Let me know what you think of the new name!

  • Paul, one of my UK connections for news, said that a music survey was conducted for the "Music for the Millenium - the greatest 100 albums ever recorded." This was a survey where 36,000 people were queried by HMV, The Guardian (a newspaper) and BBC Channel 4. Endtroducing came in at number 97! The number 1 album voted was "Sgt Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band."

    January 21, 1998
  • More U.N.K.L.E. dirt: The latest word is that the U.N.K.L.E. project album will be out this Autumn, with the DJ Shadow/Thom Yorke (Radiohead) collaboration 'Rabbit In Your Headlights' as a single out sometime in May. Thanks to Paul Andrews for the tip!

    January 15, 1998
  • In site news, I am making the big move to a domain name (which shall remain secret until I register it, but it is cool!). My philosophy for this site has always been to keep it light, partly out of conveniece in writing, partly so that people with slower access to the Internet can get the meat of information without all the pain of downloading graphics or tables. I may change the layout and some of the graphics, but it will stay simple. Thanks to everyone who has supported this site. All of the positive e-mail I received convinced me that I should make the next move. Now if only I was "official" with Mo'Wax...

  • A touring promotion company called POV 2000 in Australia is putting on a tour with Ben Harper, Beck, Foo Fighters and DJ Shadow in the first few months of 1998 (which would make it a summer tour, I guess). According to "The Shade", the tour will hit Sydney in March. If anyone goes, please send back a report!

  • Jesse attended the record release party in San Francisco and said that DJ Shadow did not appear or perform. In fact, the Justice League (the club) maintained their usual Monday night line-up of DJ's. At Midnight they played bits of Preemptive Strike and sold copies of it. They also screened the video for High Noon. Jesse said we didn't miss much.

    January 13, 1998
  • First, yes, I did get Preemptive Strike. I am not totally disappointed with it. This should help maintain the momentum gained from Endtroducing. I get quite a few bits of mail from people who started with Endtroducing and can't get the imports (or don't want to pay the prices). So, this is an excellent compilation, and actually would free up some slots in a CD-Changer normally taken up with all the singles.

  • Rock critic extrodinaire Greil Marcus wrote a good review of Preemptive Strike in yesterday's New York Times Web Edition. Although the gentleman who told me about it forwarded me a copy of the HTML, I don't want to cause any copyright problems by uploading it (at least not yet). Click on the link above if you want, and subscribe for free (in the US).

  • Rumor also has it that DJ Shadow did a remix for a non-album Depeche Mode song called "Pain Killer." It evidently has not been released due to the copyright clearance of the samples... I heard this from two sources. If anyone has anymore details (or a copy of the work) let me know! Evidently he was playing it at a Radiohead show in the UK last year.

  • This year's Brit awards, on February 9th, have DJ Shadow nominated for "Best International Male against Jon Bon Jovi, Coolio, LL Cool J, and German artist DJ Sash. There is a link effective, probably for today only at the BBCwebsite. Last year ABC TV in the US rebroadcast the whole Brits, so I hope that DJ Shadow performs and I can tape it! Any British DJ Shadow fans out there, please keep us posted about the Brits.

    January 11, 1998
  • From the Juno Listserv:
DJ SHADOW: What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 1) (Peshay, DJ Die mixes) (Mo' Wax limited 12": MW 087 [4.33]) Vital (the distributor for Mo'Wax).

    January 8, 1998
  • The Mo'Wax website is up, but doesn't have much for content... It looks pretty cool and promising.

  • Some more dirt on the new U.N.K.L.E. project and Radiohead: Thom Yorke's (Radiohead) collaboration with DJ Shadow for the U.N.K.L.E project is called "Rabbit In Your Headlights". Radiohead drummer Phil Selway and guitarist Ed O'Brien say its "brilliant" and if it doesn't get to Number 1 they don't know what will... Thanks to Phil for the tip!

    January 6, 1998
  • First of all, Happy New Year to everyone, and thanks to all who have sent me e-mails and information. Keep the mail coming! This site has definately improved over the months! This site is still the only up-to-date and dedicated site to the master DJ Shadow!

  • If you haven't heard yet, the release date of Preemptive Strike is January 13th. This has been confirmed from a couple of sources, including ICE Magazine. There is a review in the latest Rolling Stone. The last time I checked, the website didn't wasn't updated with the latest issue. I have mine on order...

  • Here is some interesting stuff clipped by Michael Kegler:

    From Urb Magazine:
Prince Paul will be taking part in "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (with the Dust Brothers' Mike Simpson, Automator and DJ Shadow)". The project will feature De La Soul, Beck, and possibly RZA and Bjork. Paul describes it like this: "It's like a B-Boy alternative-type thing, and high-tech."

    From Select Magazine:
"Thom Yorke has finished work on his collaboration with DJ Shadow, but is bizarrely refusing to acknowledge the fact to anyone, least of all his fellow bandmates. Shadow has also worked with Richard Ashcroft of late, causing [Radiohead Guitarist] Ed O' Brien to allegedly quip: "All he needs now is Jason Pierce and he's got the full set." See also "Previously" section in the 1997 News archive below about Radiohead collaborations.
