Wow, a busy news day today...

It seems that turntablelab has the out of print DJ Shadow compiled /  Quannum Funk Compilation "Schoolhouse Funk" available again. So act fast! visit turntablelab for more info, or read below:

This is definitely my favorite funk comp to come out in a while. Reason #1: it's fun to listen to. And I can honestly say that my opinion is not swayed by the fact that DJ Shadow put this together. Just because these are some of his favorite records of high school bands, stage bands, and other rarities that you will nevereverever find in the original, it doesn't mean that the record is good. But believe this record is the shit with or without all the hype. Most of the songs are covers of stuff you should know (Red Clay, The World is a Ghetto, Scorpio, Its My Thing, Chameleon) with some nice additions and plenty of drums to keep you happy. In fact there's like a thirty second drum solo with banging breaks on "The Newborn Hippopotamus," which is a dope song in it's own right with lots of breakdowns and fuzzy guitar work. There's a real nice version of Freddie Hubbard's Red Clay with a strong drum intro that has all of us here feeling ducky. The thing that sets this music apart from most of the funk compilations is the unpolished feel to it. The recordings are not always clear, the bands are sometimes off, but hey dats da beudy of it. It's like one of those people with fucked up teeth who somehow look more beautiful because of their flaws.

All of a sudden, and mainly because of the recent Product Placement shows, there seems to be a great hype around DJ Z-trip. And he deserves the hype. It's one of the dopest DJ's around, he mixes Black Sabbath, Nirvana, Madonna together with some serious hiphop stuff. Check him out. Below are some links to very nice sites about our man z-trip:

Within a short time, a new section at solesides.com will appear. It's going to be  dedicated to all the people who're into DJ Shadow / Quannum related and other, what we call, "good" music. It's gonna inform you what new music is out, links to all the fan-pages (some pages are definately worth checking out, there are some good producers out there) and so on; mainly to keep you informed what's going on in the music world in general, not just at solesides/quannum. First steps have already been taken (for example mentioning the release of the Money Mark album), but things are gonna be cool. 'Hope you like it. Some feedback would be appreciated.

Just to be sure the domain name solesides.com is in good hands, I decided to buy the domain name in stead of letting domainzero get it back from me. I bought it for two years and I think that should be enough time to think if I want to keep it when the 2 years are over......

So, you can change all your bookmarks to my site back again to

After being in development for almost a year, djshadow.com is launched.  The site chronicles the past, the present and the future of DJ Shadow - and thus the site is broken up into those components.  Each section of the site contains information pertinent to that period of time. Some of the site hi-lites include: a complete discography, an image and video gallery, a stand-alone audio player, an upcoming album feature and Shadow's digest, a forum for DJ Shadow to speak his mind.  Enjoy exploring the site - and be sure to send us your feedback (using the feedback window in the Present section of the site.)

Tommy Guerrero has done a remix for  the excellent Poets of Rhythm song Guiding Resolution, magically turning their rowdy anthem into pure slow burn dub bliss, like Calgon for Quannum fans. This fine work will appear on the upcoming Poets 12" Smilin (While You're Crying), along with other revamps by Lyrics Born, J-Boogie and a member of the Stones Throw camp whose name we can't divulge, but it's rhymes with Bad Squib. Maybe.

This is what Mike Roeder (from www.endtroducing.com) says about the upcoming release of the new DJ Shadow album:

"Since it seems to have been sort of announced... The new DJ Shadow solo album will be released February 2002.

I
know that this is pretty disappointing for some since we'd beenhearing that September or October was the release date. He said thateven though there were dates given early that they were shooting for,the album is not late. In February, Josh will have been working on thisalbum one year.
"

It seems that Official DJ Shadow site,www.djshadow.com, is still alive. It has been updated. Nothing really special to see yet, but it promises good things. Perhaps it's really true what the rumours say about the september release of the New Shadow album....

Just recently, David Axelrod was the main guest at the BBC radioshow Solid Steel. He talked about his music and his new album which is out on Mo'wax right now. He also talked about the fact that so many artists have sampled his music. DJ Shadow is one of that artists who sampled quite a few David Axelrod tracks for his own music. Axelrod and Shadow seem to be really good friends. Download the files below to listen what David has to say about Josh.

The Quannum section of this site featured an interview with the Quannum crew,  which was broadcasted on a Belgian radiostation. Due to some server problems, this interview has been removed. But, the promise that everything will be fixed soon is there. In that interview, Shadow is talking about the feature of hiphop and he imitates a DMX drum machine (it's also one of the samples you hear in the background of solesides.com) The following has happened: This part is sampled for a track by "Hero No. 7,"  Called "DJ Shadow VS The Fat Boys" You can also hear Shadow saying "everything mixed tight" which is also taken from this part of the interview.

Poets Of Rhythm, the funk  band best known for backing Lyrics Born on "I Changed My Mind", have released their album "Discern/Define" today. It's out on Ninja Tune and it presents a 'no-covers' album of new standards, led by the upcoming single "Guiding Resolution". Formed in Munich, Germany in the late 80's, the Poets have released numerous 45's on their own Hotpie & Candy imprint. Shipped with Quannum stamp of approval, as well as heavy support from DJ Shadow and Jurassic 5's Cut Chemist, Future Primitive Sound and Ninja Tune.

When Lyrics Born and DJ Shadow start going mad about a group, it's worth checking them out. Check the Quannum section of this site to listen to a couple of Poets Of Rhythm tracks.

Many of you already knew about the fact that the Britisch rock band THERAPY? covered DJ Shadow's High Noon. They are not the only one. Angular artrock punk band "Juno" did it as well. How cool is it for a rock band (with relatively traditional instrumentation) to cover a song that is basically a turntablist collage of found sounds from super disparate sources? It is very cool. to listen to the High Noon cover, click here (thanks to bluesky / http://www.mp3.com/benignintervention

New Flesh return the the fray with a track that is going to utterly smash it this summer. 'Communicate' out today features Gift Of Gab from Blackalicious, incredible beats descibed as 'Timbaland on acid' and wicked soca style singing. Forgot everything you think you know about this group, this will surprise and delight you. It's simply  fantastic. (source: ninjatune). Hiphopsite says: Gab rolls through with one of the best verses of the year

Poets Of Rhythm, the heavy funk group brought to our attention by the Quannum posse, have a new 7" single out today. Getting loads of plays ", LTJ Bukem said "love how this sounds" and John Stapleton says "essential! Both sides very good". Belive us now? (source: ninjatune.net / quannum)

Zach De la Rocha (former Rage against the machine) says in an interview with Spin magazine he's just just finished a week recording about three songs with DJ Shadow. And Zach is recording songs with El-P as we speak. This album should be sick for the production alone.

I contacted reebok and asked if it's really true that Shadow's going to
appear in their commercials. This is what Reebok had to say:

----
At 01/22/2001 10:13 AM we wrote - Thank you for contacting Reebok. DJ Shadow's music is most likely going to appear in various executions of our brand campaign--the first is the :60 brand spot that we are launching right
after the SuperBowl in Survivor II.As of yet, I do not know if and/or whenit will appear on the Reebok website.

JANUARY 15, 2001

DJ Shadow has just been confirmed to do the music for the new worldwide Reebok campaign television commercial directed by Spike Jonze. The music for this commercial will be DJ Shadow's remix of the "William Tell Overture" (many of you might be familiar with this from the film "A Clockwork Orange"). Look for this commercial to air for the first time during the Super Bowl in two weeks!
